Marijuana
health & safety.
Responsible cannabis use starts with clear information. This guide covers practical ways to reduce risk, recognise impairment and make more considered choices.
A MORE INFORMED EXPERIENCE
Enjoy with
intention.
Cannabis affects people differently. Potency, product type, individual tolerance, other substances and the setting can all influence the experience.
The goal of this guide is harm reduction: use less rather than more, give effects time to develop, avoid mixing substances, and never drive while impaired.
Start low.
Go slowly.
Know what you're using.
Never drive impaired.
WAYS OF CONSUMING
Different formats.
Different considerations.
01Edibles & oral products
Orally consumed cannabis can take substantially longer to be felt than inhaled cannabis, and effects may last longer. A common cause of an unpleasant experience is taking more before the first serving has had time to work.
- Use a small amount initially.
- Allow plenty of time before considering more.
- Read product labelling carefully.
- Keep infused foods clearly separated from ordinary food.
02Smoking
Inhaled effects generally appear faster than edible effects, which can make it easier to recognise when you have had enough. Smoke, however, contains respiratory irritants.
- Avoid deep inhalation or holding smoke in.
- Use less rather than repeatedly consuming in quick succession.
- Avoid sharing mouthpieces where possible.
- Do not combine consumption with driving.
03Vaporised products
Vaporisation avoids burning plant material, but vaping is not risk-free. Product quality and device condition matter, and unverified cartridges or liquids may introduce additional hazards.
- Choose regulated, traceable products where applicable.
- Do not use damaged or leaking devices.
- Stop if a product causes unusual respiratory symptoms.
04Topical products
Topicals are applied to the skin and may have very different effects from inhaled or ingested products. Follow the product instructions and avoid eyes, broken skin or other sensitive areas unless the product is specifically intended for them.
- Check ingredients if you have sensitivities.
- Wash hands after application when appropriate.
- Keep all products away from children and pets.
SAFETY FIRST
For yourself.
For the people around you.
Don't drive impaired
Cannabis can affect coordination, attention, reaction time and judgement. Do not drive, ride or operate machinery while impaired.
Be careful mixing substances
Combining cannabis with alcohol, medicines or other drugs can make impairment and other effects less predictable. Ask a qualified healthcare professional about medication interactions.
Store it securely
Keep cannabis in secure, clearly identified packaging and out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Edibles can be particularly easy to mistake for ordinary food.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Health authorities advise avoiding cannabis during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional for individual medical guidance.
Know your response
People can respond differently to the same product. If you're inexperienced, use particular caution with high-potency products and unfamiliar formats.
Choose your setting
Consume only where lawful and where you can remain safe. Avoid situations in which impairment could put you or somebody else at risk.
IF YOU'VE HAD TOO MUCH
Stay calm and
prioritise safety.
Too much cannabis can cause significant anxiety, panic, confusion, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or other distressing symptoms. Move to a calm, safe environment, stop consuming cannabis and avoid driving or operating machinery.
When to seek medical help
Seek urgent medical attention if someone has severe or worsening symptoms, has difficulty breathing, becomes unconscious or cannot be awakened, experiences a seizure, severe chest pain, dangerous behaviour, or if a child has consumed cannabis. When in doubt, contact local emergency medical services or a healthcare professional.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR PRODUCT
Look beyond
indica & sativa.
Traditional labels such as indica, sativa and hybrid do not reliably predict how a product will affect every person. Cannabinoid content, potency, terpene profile, dose, individual physiology and context can all matter. Read available product information and ask questions when you are unsure.
This page is general educational information and is not medical advice. If you use cannabis for a health condition, take prescription medicines, have significant health concerns or are unsure whether cannabis is appropriate for you, speak with a qualified healthcare professional.
